What to Look for in Passenger Tyres

Fuel Efficiency

Low rolling resistance tyres can save you up to 6% on fuel costs. Look for EU label ratings of A or B for the best fuel economy — especially important with NZ petrol prices.

Wet Grip

NZ gets plenty of rain. A tyre rated A for wet grip can stop up to 18 metres shorter than one rated E at 80 km/h. This is the single most important safety factor.

Road Noise

Comfort matters on long drives. Tyres rated below 70dB are noticeably quieter. Premium brands like Michelin and Continental excel here.

Tread Life

A good passenger tyre should last 40,000–60,000 km with proper rotation and alignment. Harder compounds last longer but may sacrifice some grip.

Speed Rating

Most NZ passenger cars need tyres rated H (210 km/h) or V (240 km/h). Never fit a tyre with a lower speed rating than your vehicle's original specification.

Size Matters

Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall (e.g. 205/55R16). Always match width, profile, and rim diameter exactly. Unsure? Use our vehicle search or ask Harry AI.
