Choosing the Right 4WD Tyres
All-Terrain (AT)
The best all-rounder for NZ conditions. AT tyres handle sealed roads comfortably while providing genuine off-road grip on gravel, dirt, and light mud. Ideal for farmers, tradies, and weekend adventurers who split time between tarmac and dirt.
Mud-Terrain (MT)
Aggressive tread patterns with large lugs for maximum grip in mud, sand, and loose surfaces. MT tyres are noisier on the highway and wear faster on tarmac. Best for dedicated off-roaders and vehicles that spend most time off-road.
Highway Terrain (HT)
If your 4WD is mostly a daily driver with occasional gravel roads, HT tyres offer the best comfort and fuel economy. They handle light off-road duties but won't cope with serious mud or steep loose terrain.
Sidewall Protection
Off-road driving exposes sidewalls to rocks, stumps, and sharp objects. Look for tyres with reinforced sidewalls or 3-ply construction. Some models (like BFGoodrich KO2) have specific sidewall armour for stone damage protection.
Load & Ply Rating
4WD vehicles often carry heavy loads — tools, camping gear, towing. Ensure your tyres meet or exceed the vehicle's load rating. Light truck (LT) rated tyres are stronger than passenger (P) rated equivalents of the same size.
Airing Down
Experienced off-roaders air down to 18–22 PSI on sand and soft terrain for a bigger footprint. Make sure your tyres and rims can handle lower pressures without debeading. Always re-inflate before returning to sealed roads.
